Fashion is about finding your personal style and being confident in whatever you choose to wear. Throughout time there have been many fashion tips that include what you should or shouldn’t wear, but truthfully these are tips that you don’t need to adhere to.
Style is your personality that shines through each garment and look that you wear and following someone else rules of clothing will hinder your creativity and fashion sense. We’ve put together 5 fashion taboos that you should ignore and showing a few curvy bloggers that got the look right!
Taboo #1: You should never wear white
New Decree: Stylists have noted that it’s not the color but it’s all about the fit and fabric. White will not make you look bigger if you focus on the proper fit. Avoid fabrics that a too lightweight as this will highlight any imperfections. Think about going for Ponte knits, denim or heavier fabrics. The fit is very important, don’t go larger, as will discuss soon, but go for a fit that skim the body allowing the shape of the body to be seen, just like The Natural Fashionista is showing us here. Clothing doesn’t need to be tight or fitted, but fit properly.
Taboo #2: Wear baggy clothes to hide problem areas
New Decree: If you think you look smaller wearing baggy clothes, think again… layering on baggy clothes only gives you the appearance of looking larger. You want clothing that is going to follow your curves and skim the body. If you want to add volume to a look, think moderation. Instead of an entire outfit, opt for billowy top with a pair of skinny jeans like Nicolette Mason has done. Go for volume on either the top or bottom but not both.
Taboo #3: You should never wear bright colors or prints
New Decree: What are you talking about? Color and print look amazing and you should never be scare to try them. Just do so with a few simple tips in mind. Make sure color(s) complement your complexion, think about your skin tone and undertones, as certain colors will highlight your skin which is always a plus. If you’re scared of jumping in head first, then add pops of color to a neutral look, for example, add a red clutch or bright pink ballet slippers to your everyday look. As for prints, it’s important to think about the size of the print on the garment. Smaller prints can get lost, so go for something a little larger.
Taboo #4: Stripes are not your friend
New Decree: It’s all about finding the right stripe. Designers are thinking about the proportions of the curvy body and many of them are working with stripes to make you look smaller with asymmetrical stripes. We’ve found that stripes that angle inward give the appearance of smaller waistline. The asymmetrical cut of this striped dress is the perfect example from Curvy Girl Chic.
Taboo #5: You shouldn’t wear a bikini
New Decree: With the brands and designers coming out with amazing designs for curvy women, why wouldn’t wear a bikini? Two pieces have become so much more with high-waist bottoms and different styles of tops. Bloggers such as Gabifresh has opened up the minds of curvy women everywhere that were ashamed to show their bodies, but then came this amazing women that allowed us to see that beauty, true beauty comes from your own heart.
