I’m back with another easy and inexpensive Drugstore makeup look. Yes, inexpensive! Makeup can start to get pricy if you are shopping at MAC, Sephora, Macy’s, Nordstroms, you know all the places that we love standing at the makeup counter trying every new color of fall lipsticks. There is a rush and a sensation when you purchase a high end makeup product, but are we neglecting some amazing brands at the drugstore that can offer you the similar or the same results?
Drugstore brands for a very long time, had a stigmatism behind them that they didn’t work very well or last as long, but I’m here to tell you that this is no longer the case. So many drugstore brands have reformulated to bring you lasting coverage and flawless finishes.
Why did I chose to post an all drugstore look? I wanted to show you that drugstore brands work amazing and now have so many colors and finishes for women of color. I have a pretty good mixture of high end and drugstore products, but I must say that I have slightly more drugstore brands because I’m a fan of the products. For example, the Milani Conceal + Perfect 2-in-1 Foundation + Concealer is my ride or die foundation. If I had to take only one foundation with me to some remote island, this would be the one. I found the Milani brand at CVS and I make sure to check out what’s new every time I stop in the drugstore.
As someone that purchases a lot of makeup so that I can bring our viewers in-depth products reviews and makeup videos, it is important to bring everyone products that are affordable and work.
When I purchase drugstore products I look for staying power, coverage, and color. As a woman of color with dark skin, I often find that the color is usually the issue for me. Although many Youtubers and Bloggers have raved about certain products, I’ve been unable to use them due to the lack of shades available.
However, when I’m able to find products that suit my needs, I look for staying power. Does the product claim to have 12 or 24 hour staying power? This is important for me, as I don’t like having to touch up my makeup too often throughout the day, plus if you’re constantly touching up, there is a higher chance of having cake face.
What coverage do I need? Full Coverage, Light to Medium or maybe just a tint. Knowing these answers will help you select the product for your skin needs. For a more glam look, I like to go for a full coverage foundation, but on a day to day, I prefer a medium build able coverage and in the summer, I love a tinted moisturizer or just spot conceal.
What shades are available, does this company offer darker shades? Being dark skin, I’m taking my skin complexion into account every time I shop for makeup. I’ve had makeup make me look orange, ashy and ghostly, not cute when you look back on old pictures of yourself. Finding the proper shade is so important and the great thing about drugstore brands is they are starting to take notice and offering a more needed selection.
When it comes to high end vs. drugstore, you need to take into account the areas mentioned above, Staying Power, Coverage, and Shade. To be honest, I have some drugstore foundations that blow my high end foundations out of the water. Don’t think that just because it cost over $50 that it is going to be the holy grail. It’s all about finding the right formulation for your skin type.
Drawback of shopping drugtore – you’re less likely to be able to sample or test the products. It’s a bummer to purchase a product that you have to take it back because the shade was completely wrong. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if a color will work for you when it’s inside of a frosted bottle, but it’s the chance we take with drugstore brands. Luckily most stores will be happy to accept returns of makeup that didn’t work for you.
Why should you purchase drugstore brands? Why not? The selection of brands at the drugstore has grown significantly and there are brands for every skin type and skin need. You can find products that work amazing for a fraction of the cost of high end. When trying new products you have a chance to find something that will become a staple. I know when I found the LA Girl Pro-Conceal, I was hooked and have purchased several since. So go to your local drugstore and shop around, you’ll be surprised at the amazing finds.
